Nigeria is Africa’s most populous country and the 9th most populous country in the world. With an estimated population of 170 million, one in every five Africans is a Nigerian. The country has been undergoing explosive population growth and has one of the highest growth and fertility rates in the world. By UN estimation, Nigeria will be one of the countries responsible for most of the world’s total population increase by 2050.
Health, health care and general living conditions in Nigeria are poor, especially for children and women. Infant and under-five mortality rates are high. The weak public health care system with low coverage of key interventions has resulted in the persistence of high disease burden.
Dr. Mekala Bharathi Jayaram has been helping the poor of Nigeria for over 30 years. She treats all her patients free of charge, so that people are able to receive the care they need and deserve. From basic food to medication, Dr. Jayaram makes sure that all their needs have been taken care of.
Her spirit of universal love has driven her to help the community far beyond the boundaries of a hospital. Dr. Jayaram visits public schools and provides free medical checkups to children periodically, and to serve the most vulnerable of society. She also organizes medical camps with the assistance of spiritual groups to further her medical care program to the people in need. Some of these camps are Eye Camps, where she helps visiting doctors to treat patients in need of cataract operations.
Furthermore, she has also organized a program which feeds 2,500 people once a month at various homes for the destitute. All of the food is even prepared at the home of the doctor to ensure the most hygienic of conditions are maintained.
However, HIV remains a major issue among children, young people and women in Nigeria with a prevalence rate of 4.4%. Around 2.9 million Nigerians (mostly females) are living with the virus. The epidemic is also increasing the population of orphans in the country, which is already estimated at 7 million. The extremely needy and vulnerable sections of society either due to financial constraints, lack of information and/ or non-availability of such services are unable to secure the barest of medical care. It pains Dr. Jayaram to see that a vast majority of the population does not have access to even the most basic of medical facilities and treatment.
Hence, Dr. Jayaram does not stop here. She has now started a Mobile Medicare Project with the US$50,000 of THE ONE Award money she received after reaching THE ONE 2015 as a finalist. She thinks that quality health care is a fundamental right of all Nigerian citizens. 67% of mortality in Nigeria is due to communicable and maternal condition. While primary health care centers are relatively uniformly distributed throughout local government areas in Nigeria, the rural people tend to underuse the basic health services. Therefore, mobilization is the key to heighten the use of public medical service amongst the grassroots families of Nigeria.
The mobile clinic conducts general diagnosis and prescribes suitable treatments to the patients. It also conducts blood donation camps, Mother & Childcare Camps, Eye Camps, Bone Density Checkup Camps, Dental Camps, Diabetes Checkup, etc. She also aims at providing pathological tests whenever possible so that she can direct advanced cases to the government hospitals. She also provides nutrition, hygiene and safe drinking water guidance, thus promoting a healthy lifestyle.
A vast number of diseases can be nipped in the bud by providing timely treatment, thus avoiding complicated treatment, which is often more expensive at a later stage. Dr. Jayaram believes that Mobile Medicare Project (Mobile Clinic) is more viable and effective when applied to the Nigeria situation.
